Scope — and what it does not cover

MIL-DTL-13924 is the US defence detail specification for black oxide coatings on ferrous parts — the document a drawing means when it writes "black oxide per MIL-DTL-13924". It is organised by class. Class 1 is the alkaline oxidising class written for wrought iron, plain carbon and low-alloy steel, which is where an ordinary carbon-steel screw, nut or bolt falls; further classes exist for corrosion-resisting and other alloy steels, which need different chemistry. It also makes the supplementary treatment — a preservative oil, wax or equivalent — part of the requirement rather than an optional extra. It does NOT set mechanical properties, does NOT cover electroplated coatings (ISO 4042, ASTM B633), does NOT define the preservative itself, which is its own specification, and it does not make any supplier an approved defence source. The class definitions and acceptance clauses are read from the revision in force; this page explains scope and practice in our own words and does not reproduce them.

What actually bites in production

  • 1The number on its own is half a callout. "MIL-DTL-13924" with no class and no named supplementary treatment leaves both the process and the corrosion behaviour undefined — which is to say, it leaves undefined the two things the buyer was trying to control.
  • 2The class is a statement about your material, not a grade of quality. Class 1 is the alkaline oxidising route for wrought iron, plain carbon and low-alloy steel; the classes beyond it were written for corrosion-resisting and other alloy steels. Copying a class across from another drawing because it looked stricter produces a callout that is not stricter but impossible.
  • 3Black oxide is converted out of the steel, not deposited onto it. There is no plated layer to fill a thread flank, which is why the finish turns up on drawings where a plated thread would fail gauging or where a press fit has to stay a press fit. How that layer is grown is the DIN 50938 side of the story; this page is about the line on the drawing.
  • 4The corrosion resistance belongs to the oil. A bare black surface is porous and, in a coastal Thai monsoon, unimpressive on its own — the supplementary preservative is what carries the protection, which is exactly why the specification treats it as part of the coating rather than as packaging.
  • 5It is not a sacrificial coating. Zinc corrodes in place of the steel underneath it; black oxide does not, so a scratch through the film is a rust site rather than a protected one. If the part lives outdoors, the honest comparison is against zinc plating or phosphate plus oil, not against a different black.
  • 6A defence number on a purchase order transfers no approval. It says which document governs the coating. It does not make the coater a listed source, does not create a first-article submission, and does not track a revision change by itself — put the revision letter on the order and confirm it is still the one in force.
  • 7If the same drawing carries a high property class, the pre-clean deserves more attention than the blackening. Acid cleaning ahead of any wet process is where hydrogen gets into a hardened fastener, so the cleaning route and any de-embrittlement bake belong in the same conversation as the finish, agreed before the parts run rather than after.

What to write on the drawing or PO

  • The document, the class and the revision letter together — "MIL-DTL-13924, Class 1" — because the class is what tells the coater which chemistry your material actually needs.
  • The base material and its heat-treated condition or hardness, since the class follows the substrate and the permissible pre-clean follows the hardness.
  • The supplementary treatment by its own specification: preservative oil, wax or dry-to-touch, who applies it, and whether the parts must be delivered in that condition.
  • Anything that must stay uncoated or be masked — sealing faces, electrical contact faces, patched locking features — and which surfaces count as significant for appearance.
  • Acceptance in words: colour uniformity judged against an approved sample, and, if a corrosion check is required, the method (ISO 9227 or ASTM B117), the exposure and what counts as failure. The black-oxide number supplies none of that by itself.

What goes wrong when it is cited loosely

  • "Black oxide per MIL spec" with no number, no class and no oil. Three separate decisions are missing, and each one changes what turns up in the box.
  • Calling a class written for corrosion-resisting steel on a carbon-steel part, or the reverse, because the note was inherited from another drawing. The class describes the substrate; the wrong one is not a tighter requirement, it is an unbuildable one.
  • Comparing salt-spray hours between an oiled lot and a degreased one, or expecting hours at all from a bare black surface. Without the supplementary treatment there is no corrosion claim there to test.
  • Using black oxide where zinc was the real requirement. It is chosen for dimensional neutrality, appearance and light indoor duty; specifying it for an outdoor bracket is a design decision that comes back later as a warranty conversation.
  • Treating the old MIL-C-13924 note and the current document as interchangeable without checking. Old drawings still carry the C number — read it as a pointer, then confirm which revision governs.

What does MIL-DTL-13924 Class 1 mean?+

It is the alkaline oxidising class written for wrought iron, plain carbon and low-alloy steel — in practice, the class an ordinary carbon-steel screw, nut or bolt belongs to. The other classes were written for corrosion-resisting and other alloy steels and use different chemistry, so the class on your drawing is describing the material rather than grading the finish. Read the class definitions from the revision in force before copying one across from another drawing.

Does black oxide change the thread size?+

Practically, no. The layer is converted from the surface rather than plated onto it, so unlike a zinc deposit there is nothing added to the flanks that has to be paid for out of the thread tolerance, and threads that gauged before normally still gauge after. That dimensional neutrality is usually the reason the finish was specified in the first place — and it is the same reason the black film contributes so little corrosion protection on its own.

Do black oxide parts have to be oiled?+

If the drawing calls a class with a supplementary treatment, then yes: the oil, wax or dry-to-touch preservative is part of the specified coating system and not an optional finishing touch. If the drawing deliberately calls for no supplementary treatment — because the parts are going straight into paint, adhesive or a further operation — then the part also has no corrosion claim attached to it, and any salt-spray requirement written next to it needs re-reading.
