Zinc phosphate vs manganese phosphate: match the coating to the job it does

Zinc phosphate vs Manganese phosphate

Short answer: zinc phosphate is a paint base and forming aid; manganese phosphate is for rubbing, run-in and anti-galling

Zinc phosphate grows a fine, light-to-mid grey crystal that is thinner and more uniform, which makes it a good base for paint, powder and e-coat and a classic carrier for cold-forming lubricant. Manganese phosphate grows a coarser dark-grey to black crystal at a higher coating mass, so it holds the most oil, eases run-in between steel surfaces and reduces the chance of threads galling. Neither is corrosion protection on its own — both depend on the oil or paint that follows — and the colour of the finish never proves which chemistry was used.

How to choose

Zinc phosphate

Choose zinc phosphate when the next step is paint, powder or e-coat and you need an even key for the film, when the thread is small enough that coating growth matters, or when the part needs a lubricant carrier before cold forming.

Manganese phosphate

Choose manganese phosphate when the part rubs against other steel, has to bed in gently, is at risk of galling on tightening, or when the spec asks for the heavier oil-holding layer — pins, studs, and machine bolts and nuts.

Limits before this goes on the drawing

  • Neither phosphate is outdoor corrosion protection. If the requirement is salt-spray hours, Cr3+ zinc plating is the honest route — tell us early and we will route the job differently.
  • Colour is not a chemistry measurement. A black finish can come from either system once oil or a sealer is on it, so specify the system and the acceptance criteria, not just the shade.
  • Coating-mass figures are typical guidance and move with bath chemistry, pre-treatment, geometry and basket loading; confirm them on trial pieces.
  • If the spec fixes a coating mass as a number, agree the measurement method and what can be reported before the order — coating mass is determined by stripping the layer from a sample piece.
  • Phosphating includes acid cleaning, so for parts at roughly property class 10.9 and above agree the de-embrittlement bake up front; the ovens are in this building.
  • Zinc phosphate plus soap applied to wire before heading is a wire-mill operation, not a service we run. We phosphate parts that are already formed.
  • The only quality system we hold is ISO 9001:2015. If a customer spec invokes a sector scheme or source approval, that condition has to be checked with the spec owner first.

Do you run both zinc and manganese phosphate?

Yes, both are in-house lines for screws, nuts, bolts, washers, pins and other small steel parts in production lots. Send the drawing or a sample and we will advise which system fits the job the surface has to do.

What exactly is "black phosphate"?

Black is an appearance, not a chemistry. Either system can look dark once oil or a sealer is applied, so the drawing should name the system — zinc or manganese — and the acceptance criteria rather than only the shade.

Which one goes under paint?

Zinc phosphate. The finer, more even crystal keys the paint film better and leaves a smoother surface. Manganese phosphate is normally followed by oil rather than paint.

Should I use phosphate for outdoor corrosion protection?

Not on its own. Both systems rely on the oil or paint that follows. If outdoor exposure or salt-spray hours are the requirement, discuss Cr3+ zinc plating from the start instead.
